Liposuction Myth vs. Fact
Feeling unhappy with stubborn fat is not a great way to feel. Unfortunately, some people find that little pockets of fat persist here and there, even after they’ve worked hard to get in shape. Liposuction is a time-tested, effective method of removing this type of fat. It doesn’t just shrink the fat cells; liposuction removes the fat cells for long-lasting results.
Unfortunately, there are some recurrent misconceptions out there regarding this popular cosmetic procedure. Below, we dispel several of the most common. If you have any additional questions or other points you’d like to clarify, please call our Newport Beach practice at (949) 644-2442.
MYTH: Liposuction is a good way to get rid of cellulite.
Cellulite is partly caused by fibrous tissue bands that push down on areas of subcutaneous fat, causing the bulges and dimples of cellulite. Liposuction does not alter these fibrous tissue bands, so cellulite is not typically improved by this procedure.
MYTH: You can’t hide liposuction scars.
Liposuction scars are relatively small. These circular incisions typically are well-concealed once they heal into scars. Our staff makes sure you know how to take care of the incisions as they heal, so that they will look as light and flat as possible. Depending on the treatment area, it may be easy to conceal your scars beneath clothing and undergarments.
MYTH: The fat comes back.
You can still gain weight after liposuction, but the specific fat cells removed by liposuction are gone for good. If you gain significant weight, it’ll likely be in other areas or evenly distributed throughout your body. Maintaining a healthy diet and active lifestyle will help you preserve the results of liposuction.
FACT: Liposuction is not a weight loss method.
Liposuction is designed to contour areas of your physique where fat persists despite diet and exercise. It works best for people who are at or near their ideal weight but have pockets of stubborn fat. It does not result in significant weight loss and shouldn’t be used as a means of losing weight.
FACT: Lipo can be applied to several areas of the body.
Liposuction is highly versatile when it comes to which areas of the body it can treat. Those areas include:
- Stomach and abdomen
- Chest
- Back
- Buttocks
- Thighs
- Calves
- Upper arms
- Neck
- Lower face
Dr. Agha can determine if liposuction will work for the area you want to re-contour, during your one-on-one consultation at our Newport Beach practice.
FACT: Liposuction does not do a good job of tightening saggy skin.
The ideal candidates for liposuction have firm, elastic skin. The skin will need to conform to the slimmer contour after liposuction, so saggy skin is likely to remain saggy even after the excess fat is removed from the area.
