Breast Reduction Surgery Improves Health & Quality Of Life

A recent study from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) reports improvements in several health-related issues for women after breast reduction surgery and revealed an overall enhancement in quality of life.

The survey, used to measure the quality of life progress among breast reduction patients, documented measures of physical and psychosocial health benefits after surgery. Based on the study, the physical improvements after breast reduction surgery showed significant enough to elude to the justification of insurance coverage to proceed with the surgery.

Almost 80% of the 49 patients in the study reported satisfaction and improved quality of life after breast reduction surgery. Satisfaction was based on the overall appearance of their breasts as well as their psychosocial and physical wellbeing. In previous studies, the surgery relieved pain in the patient’s neck, back, and shoulders. The reduction of pain leads to significant improvement in the ability to exercise and sleep, in turn, leading to improvements in health.

Although previous studies show obvious signs of improvement in relieving symptoms related to large breasts, new studies are designed to confirm other day-to-day health and well-being benefits from breast reduction surgery.

Dr. Siamak Agha notes that these benefits are seen shortly after surgery and often within just several weeks. Improvements in patient well-being are also seen in minimal breast reduction surgery as well, which removes less breast tissue than otherwise required for insurance coverage. Subsequently, patients deter objections from their insurance carrier and proceed with surgery regardless of coverage in order to improve their health and their quality of life.
